The Truth about the Little Mermaid

when we were kids, my sister loved the disney movie The Little Mermaid. we would always watch it. i think more than once everyday. that's why i thought i can say i know the story very well. but then recently, i got to watch some shows where they keep comparing the little mermaid to a sad story or to unrequited love. and that really confused me. so i asked my sister about it. she gave me the wikipedia link. and it's just the other day, that i've learned about the real story of the little mermaid. i never knew that it's a sad story. all along i thought it's a happy ending. sigh...

... What I really find disturbing is the story of little red riding hood. she actually got eaten by the wolf. then in the end the wood chopper hacked the tummy of the wolf to free the Grandma.

but you are right. Little mermaid is a very sad story of unrequited love.

tk: galing ng wolf noh? isang lunok lang yung grandma. hehehe. and si hans christian ang nagsulat ng little mermaid, hindi grimm brothers. :)

aika: mine too! i now view the little mermaid differently. fave ko si cinderella, wag naman sana iba ang story non :)

Yes, it's a poignant love story that ended in tragedy. It is the tale that was adapted by Mars Ravelo into the Filipino version of Dyesebel. Thanks for the post. God bless you always.

It is a sad story. They used to play a little mermaid cartoon on TV when I was younger (way before the Disney movie).

Here is the version I grew up with:

part 1,, part 2, part 3.

There's no real fairytale ending after all. And it's true that The Little Mermaid is a sad story after all. But of course in children's fables it's different.

(:
