high IQ = liar

the other day, as i was channel surfing the show in the national geographic channel somehow caught my attention. it featured kids who were inside a room and was asked not to take a peek at the toys at their back. most of the kids looked and when asked afterwards if they did look, they all denied it.

based on this, an expert mentioned that those with high IQs tell lies to avoid punishment. then they showed Bill Clinton denying what happened to him and Lewinsky. hehe.

is that true? high IQ people don't tell lie? i don't tell a lie. so does that mean i have a low IQ? i beg to disagree! :)

You make me pause and wonder if Erap's a genius.

i'm not a liar too so I also beg to disagree that I have a low IQ. And with the post above (re:erap)..i therefore conclude that the test conducted was not reliable. hehe!

btw, nov 9 birthday mo...tama ba? nagresearch me eh hehe!

Of liars and lies; Liars International, elected its first President (lifetime Pres> rumors went) with this process. Original members gathered aound the table and the rule was theone who tell the best, or the most unbeliebale lie would be the Pres. Nobody voluntered to be the first, so they asked who the memeberships the suitable person, to go ahead. But he replied, " I don't tell a Lie", right there and then he was declared the lifetime president. Heard this stories from somewhere, could be lie or guess whose lying??

Anonymous said...

Well I would say that it involves IQ since of course it's common sense that they lie to save their asses

One has to be really cunning and intelligent to be a successful liar.

As we see in movies, the intelligent ones are the mastermind. 'Yong mga bobo na criminals, are easily caught.

High IQ = Liar, it does not follow.

There's some weird if not awkward sense to it. It's probably not so much on the innate proclivity to lie, or that man is by nature a pathological liar but in relation to the audience. HIgh IQ folks might lie if they think they can get ahead of their LOW IQ audience.

Rey said...

Talaga? So liar pala ako... :)

melai: ang galing mo melai! oo nga noh? ang hindi lang nagsisinungaling ay yung mga honest. ngayon ko lang nalaman yun ha ;p

abaniko: thank you so much! now you've proven that that theory is not true :)

mai: i'm really thankful for that erap comment. coz it really debunked the theory. hehe. at ang galing mo magresearch ha. it's not nov. 9 but you're sooo close :)

vic: hehehe. do you think if they'll read my post they'll elect me as their president also?

tin-tin said...

charles: yes it does involve IQ especially thinking of believable lies, but i don't think it still means you have a high IQ. next question, high IQ = really really smart? there's a difference between being intelligent and being smart, right? :)

lazarus: and the mastermind doesn't tell a lie. coz it's their people who get caught. hehe ;p

bw: hmmm.. you have a point. maybe that's the reason :)

rey: sbe ko na nga ba! joke!!! ;p

vina said...

huh? what? duh...*scratches head* i don't understand what you're all talking about...

tin-tin said...

hahaha. very funny vina :)

So, does that mean Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton are good liars? Naku.. e paano kung yung mga formulas and everything nila ay isang malaking kasinungalingan lamang?!

Ahehehe.. well, I think it does not follow. But you do need to have good brains for you to be able to lie and get away with it. ;)

Does it mean that having a high Intelligence Quotient makes a person process scenarios faster than the average?

What was the end conclusion of the experiment?

The kids with a higher IQ who lied obviously realized the consequences of their actions. On the other hand, does it mean that the kids who didn't lie didn't realize the consequences of their actions?

This really open for discussion-- mahabang discussion!

Baka low IQ yang expert na 'yan... and he's not lying either... he's just stupid. :)

Lalaine said...

I don't tell lies, minsan nga taklesa ang dating. hehe! pero i don't think i have low IQ kasi the IQ tests say otherwise. hmm.. but i think there are a lot of people with High IQ AND Low EQ who are not sensitive to what his actions can lead to as long as he can save himself. parang gagawin niya ang sa kanya makakabuti regardless of what the others will feel/think towards him. :)

The brains of pathological liars have structural abnormalities that could make fibbing come naturally.

“Some people have an edge up on others in their ability to tell lies,” says Adrian Raine, a psychologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. “They are better wired for the complex computations involved in sophisticated lies.”

He found that pathological liars have on average more white matter in their prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that is active during lying, and less grey matter than people who are not serial fibbers. White matter enables quick, complex thinking while grey matter mediates inhibitions.

Raine says the combination of extra white matter and less grey matter could be giving people exactly the right mix of traits to make them into good liars. These are the first biological differences to be discovered between pathological liars and the general population.

duke: i'll totally be honest with you. i didn't finish the show. hehehe. when i got back to national geographic again, iba na ang topic but something to do with intelligence pa rin. they didn't show anyone who told the truth or didn't take a peek at the toys. and maybe if there were kids who told the truth, they might have told the truth for the reason that they are aware that the truth will be known/is known already :)

tin-tin said...

toe: hahaha. or maybe he's lying.. and he's used to lying that's why he's making up studies to defend his actions. hehehe ;p

lalaine: hindi naman magulo. pero totoo.. hindi naman ibig sabihin pag mabait ka ay bobo ka na :)

tin-tin said...

garnet girl: ako din, taklea na pala dating at di ko man lang napapansin. baka what the expert means is EQ. but i don't think he made a mistake there eh. khet na i disagree to what he said.

neneng: wow! you really did a research on it. it's like the left brain and the right brain. labo! hahaha. so, it's like if you're a liar, it just comes naturally. coz it's really part of your body :)

Gayzha said...

those with higher IQ are curious types...that's why those kids had a peek ... they lied afterwards because they know that it is only a game anyway...so it does not really matter ... i think people who are intelligent have a better understanding of the meaning of lying and they take responsibility of it! With Clinton - that's a different story!

pix said...

i commit white lies all the time... hehehehe...

tin-tin said...

jase: for grown-ups, if they have a high IQ, i don't think they have to lie anymore coz they know what they are doing and the consequences that goes with it

wends: so does that mean you have high IQ? :)

Anonymous said...

sana may natutunan ka sa komento ko :)

jef said...

I believe it depends on the values these people have. If their valued are not geared to what is accepted or what is right, then it's not good to generalized that all HIGH IQd individuals are liars. Buti na lang bobo ako hehe!

Sayote said...

What a stunning revelation. Is it true? Hmm... Maybe I should lower my IQ sometimes hehehehe :) Nice post! Keep it up!

vina said...

ok, i'm not being funny anymore.

emotional quotient is more important than intelligence quotient.

That's just another example of how they can fool with statistics. You have no low IQ! Neither do I - I even know how to find your post every time - doesn't that proof good enough:-)

tin-tin said...

melai: ang dme. hehe ;p

jef: ikaw bobo? naku! pano na ang mga matatalino? :)

sayote queen: heheeh. at least you're being honest. hehehe ;p

tin-tin said...

vina: hahaha. oh sorry! i thought you're still being funny. but it's true that EQ is more important. and same with jase, beauty can surpass anything. but jase, you should know how to use your beauty :)

tin-tin said...

ralpht: sabi nga nila. pano naging contradicting? pero di ako naniniwala doon.

sc: what an irony really :)

renny: thanks. you don't have a low IQ either. and renny, even if i don't know you personally, you seem to be like an honest person. so the theory is really wrong :)

There is a liar in all of us!

Anonymous said...

Yes, since i believe that being smart is based upon experience while being intelligent is innate.

That is true since you have to have the brain to build a flawless line to save your ass. hehehhe

tin-tin said...

sidney: but not totally lie..

charles: but do we always have to lie to save our ass? :)

The Doctor said...

The hi IQ thing is for children and how smart children realize that there are negative consequences to disobeying. As these same intelligent children grow, they learn that there are even more negative consequences to lying than dis-obeying. So they stop. All children lie, its when they start and when they stop, that shows intelligence amd maturity.

High IQ people don't lie? I disagree. Some people lie in certain ways. Eh pano naman sa kaso ni PGMA? She's intelligent, but she lies over the "Hello, Hello Garci?" scandal. Hindi niya raw kinakuchaba si Garci. Pero bakit siya nag "I am sorry", for what reason? People who don't lie is definitely not low in IQ either. Mahaba-habang discussion 'to and pwede sa debate.:)

hi Tin, how have you been?
i think it's a case to case basis :)

it takes wits to lie effectively

People with high IQ's I think get away with lying more. And people with moderate to low IQ usually don't kaya they just stop trying. haha

I need to wear glasses or something to make myself look smarter next time I play poker... I need help bluffing.

I'll link you up ha. You can always encourage conversation between bloggers. kakaaliw

Nope, I learned that the truth can also save our asses.

sus, i dont think so.. we are the living examply that refutes that statement, haha!

lying is due to a weak sense of what is right.. =p

pssst! kamusta ka na diyan?

i tell lies..white lies sometimes if i need them,hehe..

Richard said...

I think drawing a conclusion between lying and IQ is ... erm ... a bit tenuous at best.

Lying to avoid a consequence (punishment) is pretty typical. Lying to manipulate people is more atypical and, I think, require greater intelligence.

Perhaps the conclusion they are trying to draw is that children who have learned to avoid punishment are more intelligent than those who have not. But, if you ask me, you have to be a pretty low grade moron not to have learned that punishment is bad and is to be avoided - probably somehwre in the classification of a vegetable.

People have lots of interesting theories. sigh.

tin-tin said...

doctor: all children lie? isn't there a saying that children do not lie? :)

neko: :)

cruise: galing noh? genius pala halos lahat. hindi pa yan ang picture mo? ;p

ann: totoo.. mejo related nga ata. tama o mali? :)

jv: as most comments here say, it takes some intelligence/wits to compose an effective lie :)

tin-tin said...

jairam: i'm okaw. how's alf? what do you mean by case to case basis? :)

tani: but if you don't lie, i think you can still be intelligent :)

alternati: that's not true!!! i don't know how to lie. i don't know. i feel guilty agad. kaya i can't tell a lie. but i think somehow i have a high IQ ;p

charles: see? hehe :)

rex: naks! weak sense of what is right ha :)

vina: okay lang ako. sobrang busy kse

ghee: then you have high IQ. hehe ;p

richard: then don't do soemthing bad in the first place for you not to tell lies in the future :)

Alternati said...

well. there will always be exception to the rules... it is not possible to be smart and not lie at the same time, right.

The study subjects are not representative.
Aldult with higher IQ can forsee the consequence of being caught for telling lies or being unethical, therefore they could be a honest person
