usog

Usog

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Usog" is a Filipino superstition where an affliction or psychological disorder is attributed to an evil eye hex. It usually affects an unsuspecting child, usually an infant or toddler, who has been greeted by a stranger.

Once affected, the child begins to develop fever, and sometimes convulsions. Supposedly, the child can be cured by placing its clothing in hot water and boiling it. It is said that the condition is caused by the stranger having a masamang mata, or evil eye in Tagalog, lurking around. Superstitious folk have supposedly observed this phenomenon and regularly suggest this to the Psychiatric Disorders Handbook DSM-IV which, of course, is not accepted.

Usog can also affect adults, although it induces vomiting rather than fever. Supposedly, it can be prevented by stopping a stranger or visitor from greeting the child. Unlike "lihi", however, usog is not medically accepted.

both my pinkies are not straight. they are somewhat bended. and my mom said that if this is the case then you are prone to getting usog. maybe i am. and i remember one time in a jeepney, there was this cute baby with her grandmother. eventhough my friend and i both mentioned that the baby is cute, it was only i that the grandma asked to make a sign of the cross on the baby using my saliva. fyi, that's what they say is the cure for usog, a saliva of the person who gave usog. and that if you are prone to get usog, then you can easily give one too.

so, why am i talking about this? coz i had a really terrible headache last night with the matching feeling of wanting to throw up. and our household help said that maybe i was nausog.

Palagi akong nau-usog nung bata ako and twice nung medyo tumatanda na. I believe in this one kasi I experienced it first hand.

The CURE:
A variety of therapies may be tried. A parent, friend or companion may try to apply the pulp side of half a calamansi on the temple, the forehead, or the abdomen. Some chew uncooked rice grains which is spat on the abdomen or spat on the palm of the hand and applied by finger-crossing on the temple, forehead or abdomen.

Leaves of medicinal plants are also utilized, bayabas or litlit. The medico or albularyo chews the leaves then spits it on his hands to apply to the abdomen or other body parts or spits it on the abdomen directed while he emphatically utters: "Pwe-pwe! Puwera usog, umalis ka!" or "Pwe-pwe! Puwera buyag." The albularyo may include the use of a bulong or two (whispered prayers).

I don't know, isa sa mga pinaniniwalaan ng mga pinoy yan e , nung maliit p si Aya I used to believe that there is such thing as Usog nga, pero diba mas maganda kung may explanation nga about sa usog na yan.

Once pa lang ako nausog and it proved to be one of my most embarassing moments. We were in a stop-over on the way to Berlin when a bald German guy looked at me quizically. During that moment, I didn't think much of it, but when we were on the way to our tour bus, I felt weak and fainted. (Kakahiya) Buti na lang a couple of my friends were there to catch me kaya I didn't do the whole fainting in the parking lot scene. Kyx, my friend, told me nausog ako nung tumingin saken.

I'm still skeptical though. haha.

Same as "nabati," right? There might be a medical basis for this. Hindi pa nga lang accepted kasi walang studies to validate the theories. I think it's a psychological suggestion, a strong one --- much like a hypnotic spell.

I think the local psychiatric personnel should devote some time and study this phenomenon. Kahit pang FYI lang.

I hope you are much better now. Ingat lagi.

I remembered when I was a cute and little drooling kid, my mom would pin a red pouch with chinese symbols on it. Anti-usog daw. And since then, di na ako nagkaroon. They said that wearing a gold ring in your finger would prevent you from having "usog" and nightmares. I think it's true, since I'm wearing one.:)

Ay, ako hindi pa ako nauusog. Pwera usog! Haha!

Ayaw ko nga malawayan. Eeew! LOL

Hoping your headache and nausea clear up.

It is more likely you are either stressed, or got food poisoning.

I don't believe in superstitions and I certainly would not turn my faith into a superstition.

Take care.

Not too sure kung may usog rin dito sa Canada. My friends joke about kapres and mananaggals not sriving the cold here. Manananggal flying with a jacket? he he.. But I know of people here who suffered from the same symptoms ( headache and nausea)and consulted the doc were told that it had likely to do with something they ate.

snglguy: i don't think it's the same

vina: i'm positive that i'm not pregnant. hehehe ;p

:) ayoko kse magsuot ng gold ring except if it's given to me by my boyfriend :)

tin-tin said...

richard: i don't think it's food coz i have not taken in anything yet that time. but i'm okay now. thanks :)

neko: thanks neko! yup, i'm feeling better :)

bw: hahaha. manananggal with a jacket? hahaha. i don't know if it's because of food coz i have not eaten yet, that time. my last intake of food was hours ago pa.

aliw! may ganun sa wikipedia? lolz! :)

tin-tin said...

interesting, the fact that usog is in wikipedia. :)

but i personally don't believe in usog. pero i believe that it happens to people who believe in it.

I even prepared myself on the physical exam like doing 100 push ups, sit-ups and running a couple of meters on 10 seconds. I was so fit during that time. I only failed on the written exam. Argghhh I hate math!

I didn't know what usog means until I suddenly experienced it before. It was really a dreadful feeling. I wasn't able to sleep well for months and I had to consult a psychologist for that and then I just end up with a witch doctor who told me "Malakas nakausog sayo. Hindi ka makatulog tuloy." So after that, I thank God first and then eventually I felt better than ever.
