Balut! Balut!

as some of you knw, my family hosted two participating youths (PYs) of the Ship for Southeast Asia Youth Program (SSEAYP) 2008, Lilian from Singapore and Kaew from Thailand.

for them to be able to experience the philippine culture, we let them taste filipino food such as adobo, sinigang, chicken inasal, isaw, tenga ng baboy (pig's ear), mangoes, dried mangoes, etc etc. and of course balut!

on the first night, a mangbabalut (balut vendor) passed by our house. our maid got excited and called me to buy some for our guests. so we bought three.

then when the balut are in the table already, no one dared to try it. the guests won't try unless we do. and as a good host, i did.

it tasted like hard boiled egg, only the white is much tougher to chew. will i try it again? can i not? i just hope net time we have our foreign guests eric would still be awake so he'll be the one to show the visitors.

my brother tried to swallow the whole balut because he couldn't stand the slimy feeling when he chews it. Unfortunately, the hard part got lodged in his esophagus at the level of the thoracic inlet. We had to refer him to an ENT specialist who used a rigid bronchoscope (usually used in the trachea)to cut the balut's "stone" into pieces before he could pick them up with his instruments.

it was the most expensive balut that I have ever seen.

Non-Pinoys in my office were egging me to bring some balut at our department's Xmas party but I refused because I didn't want to "spoil" their appetite hehehe :)

So much for their silly curiosity. I know that NONE of them would have the guts to try it unless they're FEAR FACTOR contestant caliber :)

I'm salivating. I like balut. That's why when I went home one of the things I never dared miss eating was the balut. I bought a whole basket and shared it with family and friends.I can down 6 eggs on a good day with a nice bottle of brandy shared by friends.

So this was your first time eating balut?

Ok, I have not eaten it yet. Not sure if I would be able to or not.

Eating balut really is an extraordinary experience for all foreigners not accustomed to eating it. Some of our native foods like dinuguan, balut, burong isda, burong talangka, tuyo and others will sometimes turn the stomachs of foreigners to throw up. We must be very careful in offering these to them as they might try it for good manners sake only to throw up later. We would not want to eat bear's paws, monkey brains, or other tropical food if offered to us would we? Thanks for the post. God bless you always.
